PrymaCare may provide private prescriptions following a clinical consultation where it is safe and appropriate to do so. Prescribing decisions are made after careful clinical assessment and in accordance with professional prescribing standards.
Not all consultations will result in a prescription. The clinician will only prescribe medication where it is considered clinically appropriate and safe.
If medication is recommended following your consultation, a private prescription may be issued. You will be sent a prescription ID via email which you can use to collect from any UK pharmacy or you can choose to have your medication delivered by our partnered online pharmacy (Signature Pharmacy) who will send you a link to pay for your medication and select your delivery option - the choice is yours.
There is no additional cost to your consultation for PrymaCare to issue a private prescription however the cost of the medication itself must be paid directly to the dispensing pharmacy. Prices for private prescriptions may vary between pharmacies.
PrymaCare follows recognised professional standards for prescribing to ensure patient safety. Before issuing a prescription, the clinician may need to consider a number of factors including:
In some cases, additional information may be required before medication can be safely prescribed.
PrymaCare consultations rely primarily on the information provided by the patient during the consultation. We do not have routine access to NHS GP records. It is therefore important that patients provide accurate information about their medical history, medications and allergies during the consultation.
Following a clinical assessment, PrymaCare can prescribe a wide range of medications for common acute health conditions, where appropriate and safe to do so. These may include treatments for:
If medication is not required, you will receive clear advice, self-care guidance and safety-netting instead.
All prescribing is undertaken by an independent prescriber using an evidence-based approach in accordance with national guidance.
For safety reasons, PrymaCare may decline to prescribe medication in certain situations. This may include where:
In these situations, the clinician may recommend seeking care through your NHS GP or another appropriate service.
PrymaCare does not prescribe controlled drugs or medications that carry a higher risk of misuse, dependency, or specialist monitoring. Examples include:
These medications require ongoing supervision by a GP or specialist service and cannot be issued by PrymaCare.
Requests for these medications will be declined, and patients will be advised to contact their usual prescriber or appropriate NHS services.
Antibiotics are only prescribed when there is clear clinical evidence that they are required. Many common infections do not benefit from antibiotic treatment, and unnecessary use can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
The clinician will advise whether antibiotic treatment is appropriate based on your symptoms and clinical assessment.
In some circumstances, PrymaCare may issue a one-off repeat prescription for a medication you already take. This may be appropriate if:
You may be asked to provide evidence of your current medication, such as:
If safe prescribing cannot be confirmed, a prescription will not be issued. This service is not intended to replace your GP or specialist. PrymaCare does not assume responsibility for long-term prescribing or ongoing management of chronic conditions.
Where appropriate and with patient consent, PrymaCare may share relevant information with your NHS GP to support continuity of care.
Patients are encouraged to inform their GP of any private consultations or medications prescribed where appropriate.
PrymaCare consultations are intended for non-emergency medical concerns.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 999 or attend your nearest Accident and Emergency (A&E) department.
